More Fishin' Pictures

We haven't given our NC trip justice yet, and likely won't be able to via pictures, but here are some more fishing shots from the trip.

He has grown up a lot since last year's fishing trip to NC

Bryan (our friend and resident expert) and the big catch of the day: a giant catfish. Bryan came out to the cabin for a day and we fished and generally partied. We had a great time, and it was very convenient to have an expert around. He was very kind and willing to wake up at 5:30 am to take Aaron fishing.

Aaron insisted I include this picture, since "you can tell how huge it is, and see it better."

Kerrylin went with the 6 am fishers and had success!

The cast

Gutting! Aaron, of course, was very interested and very present for the fish cleaning.

The final dinner product: two bass, a catfish (cut in two), and a bluegill (not pictured), complete with corn and hush puppies.

Weekend in Heaven

We rented a cabin at Morrow Mountain State Park in NC this last week. My sister Kerrylin and I started off the trip with a 100-mile drive that took six hours and included five turn arounds, at least that many stops, and one barf-o-rama.

We're happy to report, though, that everything got better from there, culminating in a highlight of our year-- Aaron caught several (five!) fish!! We didn't get a picture of the moment (too busy enjoying it!) but here is Aaron with his first catch: a striped bass.

He reeled it in jumping up and down, and in an unprecedented show of excitement, rejected a high-five and instead threw himself into Ben's arms, saying, "I did it! I did it!" He caught four more within an hour or two, then ran into the house saying, "Who do you think caught more fish? Me or Tato?" The (expectedly) unexpected answer, of course, was that Aaron caught more. Indeed, Aaron caught five fish while Ben caught onlyt two. Five of the seven caught were too small to be taken home, but here is Aaron with the two that were taken home.

His smile lasted most of the day, and expanded each time we mentioned how cool it is that he caught fish. Such a great moment for all of us.

Here he is enjoying his well-earned lunch:

I'm interested to see if having caught fish will amplify or diminish Aaron's fishing/hunting obsession. He told Kerrylin today, "As soon as this trip is over, we can start planning the next one." At this point, all of us hope to go back as often as possible. We had such a grea time-- sitting on the screened-in porch watching the deer stroll by, grilling freshly-caught fish almost daily, and generally just having all the beauty and fresh air of the outdoors camping experience yet with the convenience of a shower, kitchen, and beds.

Ten years ago I never would have thought that the highlight of my five-year-old's life would require and result in being covered in chicken liver (the bait of choice), dead fish guts and other fishy goo. It's funny how the disgustingness of liver blood and fish scales becomes irrelevant once you see the smile on that kid's face.

And, of course, no big brother's obsession goes...

unimitated by his admiring little bro...

or unwatched by his attentive little sis.

North Carolina

We flew down to North Carolina the other day for our big summer fishing trip. Aaron has been planning this trip for over a year, and now it is finally here. My sister Kerrylin flew down with us (Ben is in Berlin for a conference until Friday) and we had quite an adventure getting to the airport. We decided to brave public transportation to save some cash, so we loaded up the three car seats on a wheely-thing, pulled or suitcase (with duffle bag on top) and took off on the train with the three kids. It was fairly painless, until the train we were on decided to wait at a station for over ten minutes. We couldn't figure out whether to stay or go. Finally we decided to go and of course once we got everything off the train and started heading up to the main level, the train we were on took off. D'oh. Anyway, so we dragged a crying Elliot (who had been rudely awoken from a nap on the train) and all our stuff up to the curb (with the help of a really nice boy) and got in a taxi. It worked just fine, and since we were so close to the airport it didn't end up costing much more than the AirTrain. But, the hassle was likely not worth the cash saved. Oh well. We had a nice adventure.

In other news, we got a new camera!! Our other one completely bit the dust, so we got a new one. I'm really excited about this one because it has some manual modes as well as the regular automatic, but it's compact enough to easily fit into a small bag.

Aaron playing in the dirt

They have a great public library here. A huge selection of kids' books, as well as plenty of places to sit and read. Here are the boys in the library.

Elliot and Uncle Matt

Aaron and Aunt Zeta/Kerrylin

Libbie can sit by herself now! Well, she sits for extended periods of time before falling over, at least. I'm not sure why but I love when babies start sitting-- even more than crawling and walking. Before Elliot started crawling, I loved being able to just sit him down and have him stay in one place and be entertained. Libbie is getting close to that point. She loves chewing on toys, but now that she is sitting a little she can sit and fling toys around without having them land on her face so often.

Kisses

In the park today, Grandpa LeeR kissed Libbie on the cheek...

Then she turned her head and gave him a big smack on his cheek. It was very deliberate; there was no doubt that she meant to do it. All in attendance agreed. Unfortunately I was at the wrong angle to really get it, but you can sort of see it in this picture.

On another note, Libbie giggled today for the first time. Not surprisingly, it was after someone said "poo-poo." She's been learning from her brothers very well.
